US WAT C2: Introducing Grand Canyon National Park

If you missed chapter one, here it is:
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=162707523774778
I have to write it down so as memory fades, I won't forget. :)
United States consists of 50 states.
The state I lived for about 3 months is the state of Arizona. (It's the state where a congresswoman was murdered with gunshot recently.)
Arizona is also known as the Grand Canyon state.

And Grand Canyon, is the place where I worked. (*lucky*)
As you can see in the pic below, Grand Canyon covers a huge area.
A powerful and inspiring landscape, the Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size; 277 river miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide, and a mile (1.6km) deep.
And not forget to mention, it's one of the SEVEN NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD!
Grand Canyon is basically divided into few parts, the WEST, SOUTH and NORTH.
Most visitors choose South Rim as it's more accessible.
Grand Canyon National Park became a national park in 1919.
Over 3 millions visitors will be here annually.*clap*

USD 25 per entry per vehicle. Good for 7 days.
Entrance:

Every National Parks or National Monuments in U.S. is managed by the National Park Service (NPS).
The rangers are the guardians to these beautiful places.

For Grand Canyon National Park South Rim, it's a well developed place.
Grand Canyon Village consists of various lodgings for the visitors and historic buildings are located at here too.

Free shuttle bus takes you to every corner of the village.

Xanterra was my "boss". It's a private company which manages the lodgings and food of the park.

I never thought that someday in my life, I would be working in one of the wonders of the world.
I remembered when I first saw the canyon, I just stood still there.
"WOW" kept on floating my mind, and I felt how tiny a person would be in front of this majestic view.

There are lotsa canyons in this world. What makes Grand Canyon so GRAND?
Simply because its age, depth, and other geological factors.
How did it form? Here it goes:
1) A huge area called Colorado Plateau was uplifted.
2) Colorado River cuts through the layers of the rocks.
3) Takes nearly 2 billion years to form up 12 layers of rocks, as what we have today.

The youngest and most upper layer of the rocks is Kaibab Formation, the layer where the village is located.
------------------------------------------------- XXX -------------------------------------
There are few lodges and historic buildings around the village.
Such as:
1) El Tovar Hotel - nearly 100 years old plus hotel.

Even President Theodore Rossevelt, Bill Clinton, Albert Einstein and other luminaries stayed here before.

2) Hopi House - serves as a gift shop.

Cute dolls: :)

3) Grand Canyon Railway Depot.

4) Lookout Studio.

5) Kolb Studio - with an art exhibition inside.

6) Verkamp Visitor Center - gifts shop.

Malaysians were here!

7) Yavapai Geology Museum.

8) To west of the village, we have Hermits Rest.

9) To east, we have Desert View, with a famous Watchtower.
A roughly 40 minutes drive from the village.

10) Other lodges such as:
Yavapai...

Bright Angel, Kachina, Thunderbird and Maswik.
OK. Enough of facts. Back to life.
The first question I thought of when I moved into my room is:
Where is the DRINKING WATER?
I find no kettles to boil water.
I even went to ask one of the locals and she said:
"Just drink the tap water!"
**Finding #2: In the States, tap waters in most areas can be consumed safely.
Meaning, I can drink while bathing simultaneously. :)
------------------------------------------------- XXX -------------------------------------
The village I lived was Trailer Village.
And you can find lotsa RV-s (Recreational Vehicle) around.

Mostly old folks, they love to travel around with RVs like a moving house.
It's so popular in U.S. and plenty of parking spaces are provided.
The sky is so clear and blue-ish all the time.
And when there were clouds, it's js simply awesome!

Fall is a beautiful season!

Mule deers are everywhere!

Pine nuts from the tree!

And the most dangerous creature in GC, the squirrel! lol!

The advice from rangers, "Never feed the wildlifes!"
The grass can be so GREEN!

Sky can be so colourful!

Sunset view is simply breathtaking!

You can find different colours of canyon when the sun shines at various angles.

------------------------------------------------- XXX -------------------------------------
Working as housekeeper was tough!
16 rooms per day, gotta skipped lunch, physically tiring.
Just racing with time everyday.
It's hurt when sensitive skin met with cleaning chemicals.

I was assigned to Maswik Lodge.
Mostly 2 queen-size beds room.

Toilets must be clean and shining~

This was our favourite sign!
Indicates that you don't need to clean this room! HOORAY!!

A little appreciation from the guest was a positive motivation!
(Cash would be better! :p )

This was my office~

It was enjoyable to be part of the team!

Cleaning chemicals~~

Surviving for 3 months with this job was not an easy task.
Salute and congrats to myself, and other Malaysian friends!:)
The facilities and benefits for employees are great and sufficient!
The village got:
Library...

Recreational Center with gym and sports facilities....

General Store for daily needs...

A post office...

A bank...

A clinic...

Laundry rooms...

Cafe for employees with special low price meal...

Internet access...

and other discounts, traveling trips, free meals and free tours!
I think Xanterra needs to prepare these benefits for employee to stay in the forest and the nearest bigger town is 90 minutes drive from the canyon.
If you hate cheese, you will be facing hard time in picking a choice from menu!
Some of the all time favourite food and beverages would be:
Quesadilla~

Burrito~

Stir Fry Rice~

Butterfinger Ice Cream~

Pretzels~

and of course Instant Mee Cup~ =.=''

Best combination of breakfast would be:
Country Fried Steak plus...

Starbucks!

It's so important to recycle and help to preserve the canyon for future generations.

At night, it's so dark that you could see the stars are filling the entire sky.
Simply gorgeous!

Without a torchlight, you might fall down and injured yourself, just like I did. =.=

------------------------------------------------- XXX -------------------------------------
My travel log began with this very first destination.

I am proud to be part of this wonder of the world for once in my lifetime!
I won't forget the twilight moment of the canyon during sunset.
So "wonderful" this wonder is!
夕阳西下的大峡谷,是如此辉煌灿烂!

If you appreciate the effort, don't hesitate to click "like" as motivation. Thanks
